Illawarra Hotel gets the go-ahead for its big renovation plans
The much-loved Illawarra Hotel has been cleared to proceed with its long-running renovation plans after the Land and Environment Court overturned earlier conditions.

The Land and Environment Court has approved Development Application DA 2024/357 for the Illawarra Hotel, ending a multi-year planning dispute over the heritage-listed Corrimal Street venue.
The approved scheme allows for a refreshed public bar, an expanded beer garden and upper-floor accommodation, while retaining the original facade and decorative tilework.
Wollongong City Council said it welcomed the judgment and had always sought 'a balanced outcome' that supported the business while protecting heritage character.
Owners said construction would begin in spring, with the venue staying open in a limited capacity throughout the works.
