Maritime police get cutting-edge technology onboard new vessels at Port Kembla

Port Kembla will be home base for a new generation of police boats, with the Marine Area Command unveiling the first of its upgraded fleet this month.

NSW Police have begun introducing a new fleet of patrol vessels to be based at Port Kembla, with onboard thermal imaging, integrated radar and longer-range communications.

Marine Area Command Superintendent Joe McNulty said the new boats would 'significantly extend the operational footprint' of officers covering the South Coast, from Stanwell Park to Bermagui.

The fleet replaces vessels that have been in service for more than a decade and is part of a $40 million state government investment in coastal policing capability.

The first boat is already operating out of the Port Kembla base, with two more due to enter service before the end of the year.
