'Not open mic night': The questions asked of Premier Minns at Kiama

A South Coast community cabinet brought hundreds of residents face to face with the Premier and senior ministers, with housing, hospital staffing and the AUKUS submarine base dominating the floor.

Premier Chris Minns and a delegation of senior ministers fronted residents at the Kiama Pavilion on Monday night for the first South Coast community cabinet of the 2026 term.

Mr Minns opened the meeting by warning the crowd that the format was 'not open mic night', urging short, specific questions so that as many issues as possible could be addressed.

Housing affordability, the future of Wollongong Hospital's emergency department and the AUKUS subs base proposal at Port Kembla drew the loudest responses, with the Premier promising to follow up on each issue in writing.

Community groups said they welcomed the access but wanted a clear timetable for action, particularly on social housing in the LGA.
