Crash landing: councillor's fears for Shell Cove New Year's Eve drone show

The failure of a high-profile drone show at Vivid Sydney has prompted at least one Shellharbour councillor to question plans for a similar spectacle over Shell Cove on New Year's Eve.

Councillor Robert Petreski told a council meeting this week that the Vivid incident, in which dozens of drones fell from the sky during a major performance, raised legitimate questions about safety at the Shell Cove event.

Shellharbour City Council has signed a multi-year contract with an Australian drone show operator to deliver an annual New Year's Eve display over the harbour, with the inaugural show planned for December.

Council staff said the operator was different to the company involved in the Vivid failure and had presented detailed safety, weather and crowd-management plans for the event.

The mayor has asked staff to brief councillors confidentially on the risk profile before the show goes ahead.
